Women in Art Wednesdays January 15 - March 19 7:00pm - 8:45pm 10 Classes $390 Women in Art Women artists have faced struggles to gain recognition for their work throughout history. This new adult art class offers a bit of art history, discussion, and hands-on making as we learn about the styles, techniques, and lives of four (possibly five, depending on time) remarkable female artists : Elizabeth Murray's playful and colorful puzzle-like canvases: We’ll experiment with clay to create a whimsical interlocking shape composition and learn how Murray pushed the boundaries of structure and form while incorporating storytelling from her own life as a mother, wife, and teacher. Sister Coretta Kent's powerful and thought-provoking screen prints: Sister Coretta Kent was a nun who used her art to discuss issues of social justice, poverty, racism and war. We’ll learn screen-printing techniques and explore the possibilities of layering shape, color, and text to create multiple posters expressing a personal message, thought, or idea. Xenobia Bailey's intricate and vibrant woven artworks: We’ll learn about Bailey’s fiber arts yarn-based work, influenced by her backgrounds in design, ethnomusicology, and needlework. We'll create spiraling symbols from yarn and rope, inspired by her mandalas, that embody joy, perseverance, and human connection. Mikoyo Ito's abstract and geometric paintings: Ito once said, “Painting is very much a part of my life, like breathing. It is a necessity. It is do or die.” We’ll learn about how Ito’s life fueled her practice to create paintings with bold, layered brushstrokes and evocative colors. Although abstract, her paintings emit landscapes, interiors, and figures. We’ll draw on inspiration for her work and techniques to create our own bold paintings on canvas. This class is for all abilities and levels. No prior experience is necessary. This class will provide a supportive and inspiring environment to all.
