What we offer:
Copy Cats I : Painting from Painting Fridays Jan 17-Mar 21 7pm - 8:45pm 10 Sessions This fun and intensive 10-session class will welcome Adult students (18 +) of all skill levels to explore several different painting mediums, review technical application, practice different painting styles, and improve upon an understanding of art history. One of the best ways to learn an artistic skill is to physically copy an artwork. In many ways, it's basically what artists go to art school for: copying elicits learning a language. In this course, we will learn by copying several paintings from different phases of Art History. We will cover a lot of painterly-territory, and learn about how to create a variety of effects and 'moves' in picture making through the lens of several artists' work. Our instructor will offer a mix of technical demonstrations and playful low-pressure projects in a casual atmosphere designed to help you achieve certain painterly applications and strengthen your familiarity and skill with painting. No prior experience necessary, but if you do have prior experience you'll get to work on your painting chops! During this course, students can expect to make approximately five paintings up to 11"x14" on canvas, board and paper using water-based, and water-soluble paints. Some paintings may take two or more sessions to finish. Some students may work faster or slower, and we will accommodate. The paintings we make will be scaled-down versions or zoomed-in crops of well-known artist's work, keeping the original painting's proportions, as we work from high quality reproductions using different strategies to achieve a likeness. Students will be able to choose from several options of an artist's work to copy. Our "Copy-Catting" schedule will be as follows (subject to change): 1: Layout strategies and painting tech workshop / medium review 2: Morandi (acrylic on paper) 3: Cezanne (watercolor) 4: Picasso (oil on canvas) 5: Matisse (two weeks) 6: Seurat (close-up/detail) 7: Wayne Thiebaud (two weeks) 8: Piet Mondrian The cost of this course includes a materials fee which covers all painting surfaces, paint mediums, and equipment. Please bring your own smock or wear 'painting clothes' * This class will run with a minimum of 8 registrations. Taught by Branden Koch
