"Ceramic Djembe Drum Workshop" Wednesdays January 15 - Feb 12 (ages 8-12) 4:30pm -5:30pm 5 classes Keep the beat with this intriguing 5 week course featuring the process of creating a functional 8" diameter Djembe Drum. Students will create a personalized version of this ancient special percussive instrument, learn how to stretch and adhere a drum skin, create various mallets, and make a personalized shoulder strap. Instruments like these have been made by hand, using natural materials since the Archaic Period. Together we will learn how to manipulate clay slabs and pinch pots to form various versions of the Djembe drum. The instruments will be made out of fireable earthenware clay and glazed to each students’ own liking. Week 1 - Intro, drawing, and slab manipulation (1st bisque firing same week) Week 2 - Glazing / Decorating (2nd firing same week) Week 3 - Stretch, glue, and clamp skins / drying with sponges. Week 4 - Mallet construction (various materials) Week 5 - Shoulder strap construction and assembly. This class has a materials and kiln fee worked into the cost. Taught by Taylor Mezo and Branden Koch
